THE SACRED IBIS (Threskiornis aethiopicus)

El Oráculo del Ibis Sagrado

This image of the Ibis model by Oscar Rojas, showing us one of the most representative positions Ancient Egyptians gave to this bird in their amazing art, provides an introduction to this short article about the Ibis and its meaning for the Egyptians of those remote times.
The ibis is a wading and migratory bird, moving between southern Europe and Africa, depending on rainfall conditions in the region. Their breeding areas are located south of the Sahara and in southeastern Iraq. The ibises are seen on the banks of rivers, lakes and swamps, looking in the mud for small invertebrates and supplementing their diet with eggs of other birds.

The ancient Egyptians knew three types of ibises, but only two of them had religious significance. The crested ibis represented one of the component parts of the human being related to the spirit after death and the sacred ibis was the representation of the god Thoth, a very important god for human afterlife. Hence, in many tombs of ancient Egypt is common to see statues of ibis especially in its knee position.

Thoth was venerated as a deity since the earliest days of the empire. His main cult take place in Hermopolis, Middle Egypt. He is represented as an human with an ibis or baboon head. Thoth was the god of the time, the chronology, accounts and mathematics. He was responsible for counting the years of each pharaon rule and write it in the leaves of the sacred tree. He was the inventor of writing and speech, keeper of divine order, rituals and patron of scribes. In the afterlife trial in front of Osiris, Thoth related the deeds of the death that he has write in a piece of wood.

In 1964 British Egyptologist Walter Bryan Emery discovered the fascinating catacombs of the ibis near the oldest pyramid: the Step Pyramid of Sakkara.

While searching for the tomb of Pharaoh Imhotep (deeply related to the god Thoth) were discovered a maze of tunnels with many burial chambers where the mummified ibis were placed. Amazingly there were counted about a million and a half ibises.

It is not sure why this religios cult was so prolific, but probably the ibis were presented as offers for Thot and after that they sacrified and mummified them.

THE ANKH AS A SYMBOL OF ETERNAL LIFE. IN MEMORIAM

Las Justas del Madrigal wants to join the sorrow of Mrs. Florence Temko's family and the whole origami community for her pass away, last November 13th in her house at La Jolla, California. Mrs. Temko dedicated her whole life to the spreading pf the origami all around United States of America and her models, that are hundreds of them fill a big bibliography. In her web page you could leave a message for her family but also her spectacular pieces of art:
http://bloominxpressions.com/origami.htm

Nicolas Gajardo from Chile has dedicated her his model named The Ankh and I dedicate her the following article about the meaning of the Ankh.

The Ankh(ˁnḫ)

Essentially the Ankh is a very ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs shown in many of their artistic expressions, both in the decoration of the burial chambers as in the papyri, especially in the Book of the Dead that has been preserved till our days.

The Ankh hieroglyph meaning "life" and more specifically the "life after death." It is why the gods are shown carrying the ankh in their hands, thus indicating his power over life and death, and their control over the lives of human beings.

The ankh represents the human desire for immortality and while this was restricted to the pharaohs, during the New Kingdom the religious concept was extend to all Egyptians, as is indicated in the Book of the Dead.

The Ankh appears in many of the names of the pharaohs and, undoubtedly, the best known is the case of Tut-Ankh-Amun with the meaning of "Living Image of Amun".

This image shows a highly stylized Ankh with the sophisticated art of this pharaoh.
Because of its link with the eternal life, the Ankh was taken as a symbol by the Egyptian Christian churches, especially the Coptic church.

Many other meanings have been given to the Ankh, but for the purpose of these jousting this little article helps us to insert ourselves in Ancient Egypt.p>

BEATRIZ WILL APPECIATE YOUR AESTHETIC CRITICS IN COMMENTS.

It is a personal challenge to Beatriz González from Chile for the design of a chilean tinamou (Nothoprocta perdicaria)

12 de Noviembre 2009

Beatriz González Muzzio, 27, Origami Chile. Modular origami is my passion, but in recent time I have been trying other origami models like knotology and representational origami. Some of my work could be seen at:

http://www.origamimodular.blogspot.com/

www.flickr.com/beita1810

This model was design for this challenge. I didn't know anything about birds in origami, so I have to investigate from the very beginning. To get the base was not as difficult as I thought, however the design of feet got all the difficult I had with the design. After studing the process from Roman Díaz and Daniel Naranjo I found out that this bird has 3 long fingers in front and a small one at the back, so my search go to a next level and an article by Román gave me the solution.

The chilean Tinamou is a small bird app. 29 cm. Strong brown/gray body, short wings an almost without a tail; it is a very noissy bird. This bird prefers walking and spent most of the time among grassland and scrub. If threated, could fly short distances with noissy voice. It feeds with seed, dry fruits and small insects. Breeding in spring, laying 8 or 10 eggs. Aves de Chile by Alicia Hoffman e Ivan Lazo.
